Life With Toddle Tots...

A couple of years ago, the word 'teacher' was like an epic sign of a bad omen and sometimes I had the image of an evil koboko sleighing demon yapping at children. it was DREADFUL to say the least. I remember crying a lot when someone said "You will be a teacher when you grow up". It was extremely depressing to say the least. My mom was a teacher but it didn't make that profession seem cool. In fact, my mom being a teacher solidified my 'hatred' for teaching cos she didn't hesitate to whoop the hell out of me when I did something wrong.

Now fast forward to September 2014. After job hunting for approximately three years, I landed in a classroom. Everything was kinda weird seeing that I studied Mass Communication and not Education. Like I was used to teachers whooping naughty children but the number one rule in this school was that as soon as you're found whooping, you'd hop out of the school premises with your sack letter in hand. So I trained under an amazing teacher for about a year. After the session, I was moved to another class. Ever heard the phrase "Terrible Twos"? Yup. I became the toddler class teacher. At first I thought "Jeez, these children can't talk... how do I get through to them"? I started researching and researching, learnt baby sign language and downloaded a gazillion nursery rhyme videos.

Now after this summer term, my kids are moving on to Play group and courtesy these amazing 13 kids, I have discovered that toddlers have an amazing way through which they get things done. Most times though, they just want to have their way and there's nothing you can actually do about it. Just thinking about it makes me laugh. you know potty training them has been an amazing experience. Most times they go ' Ms Chechul (Racheal) I wan to go wee wee', and I take them to the loo. some of them go at once, others will sit on the loo and stare at you, others will give a big grin and start telling you stories that you can't understand. Others will even sleep on the toilet. Turn your back for a second and some of the things you'd see as soon as you turn back round are so hilarious. See Samples below:

Sadly I cant use my children's pictures for this blog post but I hope these images give you a vivid picture of what I'm trying to say. Now lets move to feeding. you know, most times you think these cute little angels can't feed themselves, but you're wrong. They can I tell you. They are pros....

Messy right? Trust me, somehow somehow, the food ends up in the right place. OK so, I believe toddlers love to share. I struggled initially with getting my kids to play cooperatively with each other and share toys with one another. Some of them snatch from others and if the child they are snatching from doesn't react, they think its OK. Then they move on to another child to snatch from him or her and then they receive slaps in between sentences like 'don't do that', 'nooo... gooo', 'my own', 'I will tell' and then the child doing the snatching will run to me and say 'Ms Checul (Racheal) He beat me', and when I ask, 'What did you do'? He/She gives me a hug to avoid being scolded. Like I said earlier, there seems to be an improvement. this is how we share these days:

They must have a piece of what you're asking for before giving it to you. You know kids love to explore with shoes, toys, clothes, dolls, building blocks, and the likes. My kids love handing shoes over to adults whenever we are going outdoors to play or for a lesson. Sometimes they cry if they don't find shoes in the cubby to give to a familiar adult. Sometimes again they fight over these shoes so I've learnt to share three pairs of shoes between them. One leg per child. It doesn't work most of the time cos a particular child likes holding a pair of shoes especially mine. If another child gets it before him, he cries. So one time we had a lesson on dressing. I'd say 99% of the kids did this to the adult shoes they had in their possession:

I can go on and on about how adorable these toddler kids are and how much innocence they exhume daily.... It teaches me that the purity in a child brings smiles on God's face. Harming them is like harming God directly. I have learnt patience, I have learnt to love, I have learnt new styles of sharing, I have learnt how to stick together as a team cos my Kids are so used to each other that they stick together all the time. PS: Jesus was right when he said, you must be like a little child before you can enter into the kingdom of Heaven. My toddle tots have helped me see things clearly and I love them.... Their names are.....

PHONE SWAP- The Review PT 2

In typical Nollywood fashion, welcome back to the Part Two of Phone Swap - The Review. Hopefully this will be the last part. Alright,I'm going to continue from where I left off. The first part was basically the downside or what some people call the epic fail in movies. Good news is, the Upside definitely outweighs the Downside. I'll try as much as possible to arrange my thoughts in a manner that will grant you easy understanding because they seem to be all over the place. #Excited.

This is the part where honor will be given where it is due. I must say I am mighty proud of Golden Effects Production. They executed top notch professionalism in all film making departments ranging from good acting, awesome directing, fantastic script writing, sound, lighting, set design, camera movements and shots, Costume, Make up, you name it. I'll point out some of the things that stood out.

All the sets used in this movie are totally realistic. believe it or not, the interior of that airplane Akin and Mary were in, was shot on stage. YES STAGE! Isn't that amazing? Nigerian film makers should borrow a leaf from this production. It doesn't have to always be about cutting cost and saving time. You need to SACRIFICE for something you are passionate about.

Another Set I really loved was Mary's Home. Both the exterior and interior depicted the kind of live in space most tailors who are trying to keep body and soul together lodge in.

 The Sets used in Rural Owerri and Urban Abuja plus the office Scene were incredibly realistic. Both worlds were depicted perfectly through the way and manner the scenes were set.

Aexis' fashion outfit was another realistic Set, among others.

I'd briefly touch on Make - up as well. You know how female cops paint their faces and look hedious under the sun while trying to maintain law and order? That was the kind of make-up used on Cynthia (Ada Ameh) who was an officer of the law in the Movie. Alexis' make-up also depicts the kind that all these wanna be society ladies wear just to ''stand out''. Hideous!! Make up was excellently done. Costumes were also very appropriate for the characters being portrayed.

I'm going to say acting in this movie is first class. My personal favorite is Chika Chukwu (Hussana). She balanced humor and seriousness without making it unreal. It seemed like a very natural part of her and I loved it. Acting is supposed to be natural and not forced. If it's not in you, then it means you need to work harder. We need to see more of her in our TV Sets. Another Duo I liked were Alpha and Omega (The Twins). Their names alone will send you laughing straight to the floor. All Characters were portrayed excellently well. Who won't love some Ada Ameh, Joke Sylva and Chika Okpala?


Some camera angles and shots left me breathless. I'd leave a few pictures below to speak for themselves.

A lot of products were advertised in this film and I believe its a way of showing your sponsors and those working hand in hand with you that you appreciate them as a film maker for going on this not-so-easy journey with you. I spotted Globacom, Pepsi, 7up, IRS Airline, among others.

There were lots and lots of hilarious scenes in the movie. I'd recommend it anytime and any day to people whose spirits are down and need some form of activity to help liven them up. Below are some of my favorite scenes from the movie.

I also appreciate the fact that Phone Swap was dedicated to Nigeria's very own Sam Loco Efe who passed away shortly before the movie was made. He was supposed to play the role of Mary's dad and Chika Okpala humbly accepted to play that character after Sam's demise. May the Gentle soul of our veteran actor and all other actors in the industry who have passed away rest in the bosom of the Lord. Amen.

Do I recommend this movie to all those who haven't seen it? Of course YES! It is a must watch for everyone as it is family friendly and cuts across all ages. Laughter they say keeps you young and healthy and is food for the soul. Too much laughter isn't bad for anyone. I'd say go out there and purchase ORIGINAL DVDs from retail outlets and let's fight piracy together.

PHONE SWAP- The Review PT 1

The movie Phone Swap can easily pass as one the most effective comic films produced in the history of Nollywood movies.I know I'm a bit stale and all, seeing that the movie was released in the year 2012, but reviewing Phone Swap I believe will be a good way to revive my blog which has been fallowing for over a year ;)

Lets Get down to the Review proper. Phone Swap was officially released in the year 2012 as mentioned above, but those who didn't have the opportunity to watch it that year (C'est moi), have been able to purchase ORIGINAL DVDs which were released sometime in December last year (2014).

The Cast of the movie Phone Swap is extremely rich because it's filled with Veterans, A-List Actors and Upcoming actors and actresses alike. These Actors include Joke Sylva, Chika Okpala (Zebrudaya), Wale Ojo, Nse Ikpe Etim, Lydia Forson, Ada Ameh, Chika Chukwu, Hafiz Oyetoro (Saka) among others. It was directed by our very own Kunle Afolayan. The Story was written by the very talented Kemi Adesoye.

Phone Swap is a Romantic Comedy about two adults who bumped into each other at the airport and mistakenly swapped phones. This event leads them into a weekend in each other’s lives. Akin finds himself in Owerri (Mary's Hometown), while Mary finds herself in Abuja (Akin's family home). Both worlds are poles apart as Mary Lands in Paradise while Akin lands in what seems like Hell. Both parties have to seize the opportunity to help each other achieve what was actually taking them to their various destinations. Akin had to Solve some Family issues while Mary had to help Akin deliver a message to the chairman of the organization where he works. There are however so many scenes in-between that excellently portray life in Rural and Urban Nigeria respectively.

Now i'm about to get down and dirty. there's no such thing as a perfect movie. Movies can be near perfection at most but often times than not, there are usually errors that are either glaring or subliminal in what some of us might call the BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME. i'll try as much as possible to support my claims with pictorial evidence *wink*

Now, look at that dress Madam Alexis (Mary's Boss) is holding. According to the movie, that dress is worth 100,000 Naira. Infact let me write it in words: One Hundred Thousand Naira !!! The dress is pretty BUT even in high end boutiques down here in Abuja and probably in Dubai, you can't purchase a dress like this for more than Thirty Thousand Naira (30,000), which is still very expensive. They should've made the price of the dress realistic.

Let me start this part by saying i am a huge Hafiz Oyetoro (Saka) fan, but his talent was underused in this movie. His character was supposed to be this funny office snoop who gathers underground info for his boss, and also supplies info to other people about his boss. He was obviously trying so hard to be funny but eventually nailed 20% of the comic relief he was supposed to deliver. Love you Saka but the truth according to my books has got to be said.

I wish I had an audio clip to back up my next point (Will work on that) but I hope this photo helps. Look out for this phone call scene at the beginning. Mary according to this movie is an Igbo girl from Imo State, Nigeria. In reality though, Nse Ikpe Etim is from Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. There was a serious mother tongue interference in the Igbo she spoke all through the movie. It was an excellent attempt but MTI just had to mess things up for her delivery.

This next point is what I call 'The Tyler Perry Syndrome'. I'll explain. The Tyler Perry Syndrome can be defined as the situation where the director of a movie acts in most or all of his or her movies. I believe the job of a director is tough enough as it is. Adding acting to directing can be very tasking. I really don't know how Tyler Perry does it but he is in most or all of his movies. Kunle Afolayan (The Recharge Card Person Above) is in almost if not all the movies he has directed. There are a million and one upcoming actors out there who can execute this role perfectly well. He should give such persons a shot so that when the person finally makes the A-List, he'd be proud to have helped in building his or her acting career.

The final oops moment in my books is the part where Madam Alexis decided to pay for a two way flight ticket to Owerri for Mary to go and sort out her FAMILY ISSUES. Now this point is based on making stories realistic. There are good people with kind hearts in Nigeria, but which small scale business owner will take out money in the region of 50,000 Naira to pay for her staff's flight ticket? The highest she would've done is to allow her travel. That is more realistic. If she had asked for a loan, then that's a different story entirely. Like I said earlier, if she had just permitted her to travel for a couple of days, it would've been more realistic.

At this particular juncture, we're going to take a break. Watch out for the other part of this review which has all the surplus A Class moments in this movie ranging from acting, to costumes, set designs, make up, soundtrack, you name it. All claims will be backed up with pictorial evidence.

Fast rising award winning Nollywood star Miss Titi Joseph, is definitely a force to be reckoned with in the Nigerian Movie industry.

Determined to leave a mark in the sands of time, Titi Joseph is not only brilliant in her acting carrier. She is also beautiful, intelligent and down to earth.

She has starred in numerous movies including Broken, The Last Supper, April’s Memoir, Sage, Dormitory8 and so many more.

In an interview with yours truly, Titi joseph shed more light on her career as an actor and also shared some of the challenges she’s had to overcome in her quest to become an A List actor.

- Who is Titi Joseph?

Titi Joseph is a lady who believes in doing whatever is worth doing well. She's from Kogi State, a graduate of Mass Communication from Ahmadu Bello University.  She's an actress, a journalist and enjoys singing too.

- Interesting. Can u give us a brief history of your acting career?

Hope this won't start like a cliché because many always go this way when asked this question but well it started way back in primary school, just being a thing of interest for me, started with drama , cultural dance, then I did dramas on stage in church but on a professional note I started in 2007,when I got my first opportunity in a film titled 'Inner Pain' with Lumex production but because of school, I had to stop till I was done with school then nysc. I started trying out again in end of 2011.

- As a rising star in the movie industry, would you say its been a smooth ride thus far?

 Not at all, but God has been faithful.

- Hmmm... can u highlight some of the challenges you've faced and how you dealt with them?

First, probably based on my location, I mean where I'm based, few acting opportunities come by when compared to places like Lagos, and Asaba. So when the few ones come along, and one probably goes for an audition, you don't get called all the time because of course, auditions mostly don't necessarily prove an actor's "DEEP" abilities. Also, our industry could be sentimental: directors come a times to look for people who will play extras cos they already have their main casts. At the end, you just keep giving it a shot cos its what you love doing. Can be tiring atimes but like the saying goes, good things don't come easy. In summary, those are some of the challenges I have encountered.

- Can u tell us some of the movies you've been a part of and what your experience was like on set.

Broken, The Last Supper, April's Memoir, Sage, Dormitory8, Cynthia, Rage, To Serve with all our strength, Breaking free, etc. And for my experience on set, I'll say different experience for different set but the one common thing about them all was the feeling of satisfaction to be doing what I love doing and each set gave me an opportunity to learn to be better in coming jobs

- You mentioned you're a journalist. How do you juggle between acting and journalism at the same time?

Juggling between acting and journalism hasn't been easy cos they are both time consuming in their own way but I'm managing well cos the time for both are flexible too. I take the acting jobs I can that don't collide with time I have to be at work and painfully turn down those I can't do.

- Nice.  On a personal note however, is Titi Joseph in a relationship?       

I'll like to keep that personal. (laughs) No comment

- Have u ever been told you look like Omotola Jalade Ekehinde? And how do you respond to that?

Yes, a couple of times. She is someone I admire a lot but while I see that as a compliment, I don't want to be seen as a shadow of another person, I'm Titi Joseph and I look forward to leaving behind a legacy as Me not an Omotola look alike.

- So who are your favorite Nollywood actors? Male and Female?

I'm not someone that has favorites for a lot of things, this inclusive. But I can say I respect the interpretation skills of such actors like Ramsey Noah, Nse ikpe Etim's depth challenges me and I'll like to mention Mercy Johnson for her versatility. I just must add that Majid  Michel(Ghana) is awesome and this guy from Jacob's cross, HLomla Danlala.

- Who are your favorite Hollywood actors?

I am awed by Jennifer Lawrence, don’t  have any best male Hollywood actor yet.

- Finally.... for aspiring actors out there, what can u say to encourage them in their struggle for being A List actors?

For the final question, the fact is we are still in the race together. Take the baby steps towards your passion and with God on your side, those baby steps will turn into Giant strides towards success. Wish us all a dream come true. Having in mind that the race is not for the swift or the strong but for those favored of the Lord. So Excellence + God + determination. + perseverance = success#

BROKEN – Let The Child Live (2013)

Broken is the story of a pair of ex lovers  Miriam and Gabriel, who had three children while they were in their youth. Being irresponsible at the time, Eric, Samuel and Emmanuella faced abandonment. Years later, Gabriel and Miriam get married to different people and are living peacefully. Out of the blues, Samuel and Emmanuella show up at Miriam’s home. Their arrival opens  wounds, and many secrets start to unfold. This abandonment leaves Eric on death row, Emmanuella in an Asylum, and Samuel a nobody in the society. How will Gabriel and Miriam face this BLAST FROM THE PAST?.......

Every movie, be it good or bad, is subject to some form of constructive criticism. Now this movie, Broken, is a multi award winning movie. The plot is intense, informative and very emotional. People who have “Tough” hearts might face a turn around after watching this movie.

Now this emotional movie tells a story which actually happens in reality. Everyday in Nigeria, children are being abandoned, abused and subjected to some form of violence. some parents do this due to circumstances or just sheer selfishness and stupidity. Be that as it may, this movie has lots of positives and negatives simultaneously.

Starting with the positives, Broken is a movie with lots of new faces. This is probably a conscious risk taken by the Producers of the film. Funny enough, these actors know the onions of their job description. Where there was need for tears, they gave tears. Where there was need for laughter, they gave laughter. Knowing fully well that the movie is an emotional drama, they gave 100% of their emotions. They also didn’t look directly into the camera while delivering their lines. This in itself is extremely impressive.

Miriam’s family was seemingly an average one. This was clearly shown in the location of the House being used. Locations weren’t exaggerated and every spot used matched the activities taking place in the scene.

Regarding the costume used, every clothing item used either by the parents, children, prisoner, etc. was totally in sync with the story being told. For instance, scenes shot at home on a normal day had the ladies wearing flip flops and normal clothing. In some movies I have seen, you’ll find people wearing heels and painting their faces like they’re going for an occasion mean while, the scene being shot is portraying an ordinary day.

Camera movements and angles were top notch. Where there was need to lay emphasis on a particular thing or person, adequate shots were taken. The camera wasn’t moving like an epileptic person caught in a cross fire between cops and thieves. In all, shots, angles, movements in general were impressive.

Talking about Sound track and Background music, both were in sync with the story being told. Slow thought provoking instrumentals were used to stir up emotion and strong ‘’Ghen Ghen” instrumentals were used as well to lay emphasis on some action scenes or statements being made.

Now this is the part where the bitter truth is told. In as much as there are a lot of positive sides to the movie Broken, to create a balance, the bad guys come out to play.

I pay close attention to detail so in the scene at the beginning  where some lunatics were shown, they had their hairs nicely done. In reality, people who have mental issues will not, I repeat NOT have the patience to sit and get their hair done. That’s an ‘oops’ moment right there.

There are points in the movie where conversations are taking place but the background music overshadows whatever it is the characters are saying or trying to say. And at some point there was no sound at all. I’m hoping it’s only evident in the DVD I own.

There were a few grammatical errors too. This is what the average Nigerian youth calls ‘’Gbagaun’’. Thank God they are very few and quite unnoticeable. But people who have error detectors implanted somewhere might not miss it.

BROKEN, is a must see movie for every individual and family as the case may be. Big ups to the Writer/Director Mr. Bright Obasi Wonder.  The movie has A LOT of valuable messages that can help in shaping lives, mending broken homes and making our dear country Nigeria a better place. So if you haven’t seen the movie, it is out on DVD for just 500Naira. Grab a copy and slip it into your DVD Player so that your family can get informed and enjoy top notch story telling at the same time.

MUST READ! Got Me Laughing so Hard... #Someone's Weed Experience

I had just moved out of my parents house and was sharing a room with my "friend". I had no idea he smoked weed, despite his suspicious movements and signature weed scent(abi na odour?) barely two weeks after moving in with him, my worst fears were confirmed as he started bringing home his weed smoking buddies and they would occassionally roll a wrap and smoke it right there in the room or mix the weed with beans or spaghetti.

Being a very curious person i always wondered what made them happy after smoking, so i decided to find out for myself(wrong move)

It was a very hot day in february, a saturday i think it was, my friend was out as usual. I searched everywhere for his stash but couldn't find it so i decided to go and get mine. I arrived the weed joint all sweaty and nervous, half expecting to get muged but nobody seemed to be aware of my presence there, they were all on different planets all expect one i concluded that he must be the seller so i approached him and the following conversation ensued:

Me: how far?
Weed seller: i dey
Me: i wan buy weed
Weed seller: how many parcel?
Me: parcel ke? Iro oo, na just small i need
Weed seller: laughs really hard. bolo leleyi sha(meaning this guy is a dunce oo)

Apparently, a parcel of weed is that small wrap, i didn't know that. I thought it was something very large.

I gave him 1000naira and he gave me a tiny wrap of weed with a white paper, i was suprised when he gave me 950 as change. I couldn't beleive weed was that cheap.


On my way home, i decided not to smoke it but mix it with beans because i thought that it will be better that way(another wrong move). Long story short, i cooked beans and added the whole weed, ate it and called my friend, i told him ogbeni i just ate weed oo and nothing happened to me this one that you people will eat and be feeling funky, i don chop am oo. My friend was like ehen you be strong man oo.

I decided to take a quick nap before doing laundry, i woke up about 20 minutes later on the floor i was banging my head on the floor, and i couldn't stop, my heart beat was so audible and fast, everything was extra bright and extra loud. After a few minutes of head banging, i was able to get up from the floor, I felt as if i had just gained access to a part of my mind that I never knew existed previously, it was scary and cool at the same time. I could feel the blood flowing in my veins(you have to experience it to believe it. Though I strongly advise against it) i felt so uncomfortable in the room, it felt like i was in an oven suddenly a voice in my head wisphered ogbeni bo aso e joor (off your clothes) i obeyed. The voice came again oya sa re(now run) that was when i realised that the weed had taken effect so i decided to take a shower to see if it will calm me down, tbut the water felt so hot on my skin so hot i ran out of the bathroom.

I called my friend to see if he could help me make sense of what was going on but he laughed at me, he asked me the quantity of weed i took and i told him i used a whole parcel, he said guyyyyy you don eff up if you no sleep in the next 30mins, you go mad oo go chemist make you go explain yourself.

By this time things had escalated, i had a severe itch at the back of my head that wouldn't go away no matter how hard i scratched and i was convinced that the beating in my chest was an evil spirit that could only be killed with a punch. I ran to my neighbour champion and told him champion e jo e fun mi lese laya(champion pls punch me in the chest) ti e ba gbami lese laya mo ma ku oo(if you don't punch me i will die oo) he hissed and walked out having had enough of such nonsense from the boys in the boys quatters.


The voice in my head came again iwo na o de gba ara e lese laya abi o ti fe ku ni(why don't you punch yourself in the chest or do you want to die?) i punched and punched but there was no difference.

The house was getting hotter, the voice in my head was getting louder, the itch in my head was getting worse, and the evil spirit in my chest was getting louder. Then came the voice again oya ma sare lo(start running) so i started running but on getting outside in the sun, i felt so cold i was shivering but that didn't stop me from running(i would have given husain bolt a run for his money on that day).

On getting to the chemist, i realised i was bare footed, i told him i had a severe headache i needed something to make me sleep immediately, he gave me the drug and i chewed it right there in his presence, next i asked him to give me a drug for evil spirit, that was when he realised something was wrong with me and chased me out.

I got back home and tried to sleep but my heart beat wouldnt let me, so i ran back out this time around to a nurse in the area, first thing she asked was kilode o wo bata ni? (why don't you have your shoes on? I told her jackie chan ti gba bata lowo mi (jackie chan collected my shoes) i was finally able to explain my situation to her and she took me in, tied something around my elbow and injected me directly in the vein. I passed out immediately only to wake around 1 or 2am in the middle of the night with the worst kind of hunger I have ever felt in my life. I ate a whole loaf of butter field bread in one sitting without butter or tea.

I came home to a hero's welcome, my friend told me e be like say your head no carry am but e go better make you try am once more so you go dey use to it. The following day while the house was empty, I packed my Ghana must go and like the prodigal son in the bible I went back home to my parents. It's been a few years since that experience but the lesson I learnt is an unforgettable one. My curiosity hasn't gotten me in trouble again and my circle of friends have since changed.
